Bendigo Bound: What To Do On A Weekend Away From Melbourne
On my recent visit to Melbourne we decided to get out of town and spend a weekend away in Bendigo - a regional city about 1 1/2-2 hours north west from Melbourne known as an arts hub and for its gold rush history; the discovery of gold in the 1850's. It was super easy to get there by public transport; hop on the VLine train with some music and headphones and you're set for a smooth scenic ride. What to do when you arrive in Bendigo? Here's a few ideas of what we did - and what you can do on a weekend away...
STAY: Schaller Studio
The Schaller Studio is part of the Art Series Hotel Group - a collection of boutique hotels inspired by and dedicated to Australian contemporary artists. I haven't stayed at any of their other hotels but from my stay at this one I can honestly say I felt right at home. Mostly because this is how I envision my future apartment to be - wooden floors, vintage brown leather sofas, tall walls filled with beautiful artwork and leafy green plants in almost every corner. The communal space in the lobby was warm and inviting, just the perfect kind of ambiance to have a cup of tea and catch up on some reading. Or in my case, enjoy a glass of wine and good conversation with someone new.If you're planning a weekend away to Bendigo I highly recommend staying here. Check out my video of the room I called home for the weekend.Book a room at The Schaller Studio here.
Hire a LEKKER bicycle and explore
These retro LEKKER bicycles are available for hire at The Schaller Studio and will have you riding in style. Hire one from the front desk and spend the afternoon exploring on two wheels.
Visit the latest exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery
Bendigo Art Gallery is one of Australia's oldest and largest regional galleries. The latest exhibitions that were held when we visited were THE BODY BEAUTIFUL in ANCIENT GREECE & UNDRESSESED: 350 years in fashion underwear organised by London's prestigious V&A Museum. Also, with Bendigo's vibrant arts precinct you'll be sure to find a little inspiration around town.

Have a picnic at Bendigo Botanic Gardens
Pack a delicious lunch on a sunny day, hire a LEKKER bicycle and make your way over to the Botanic Gardens for a picnic. Take some pictures along the way. Afternoon in lush greenery sorted.
What would a trip be without trying some of the best local restaurants? We got to experience a Sunday session progressive dinner with Rocks on Rosalind that included a POP-UP bar on the Schaller Studio tram. The tram took us on a trip around Bendigo with cocktails hosted by the Rocks Bar team and we ended up with a preview of their underground bar. A great afternoon to say the least - big thanks to Kathie & the team!Rocks on Rosalind - 12 View Street, Bendigo (left image)Masons of Bendigo - 25 Queen Street, Bendigo (dessert in right image)Read More: 6 mouth watering desserts you need to try in Melbourne
Might I add that everyone we came across was so nice. A lady saw us trying to figure out which bus to catch at the train station and helped us with directions to our hotel. The taxi drivers would always round down instead of up ($8.50 would become $8 instead of $9) and chats with new folk were never intimidating.
